NHS Digital
Last Updated: March, 2019

NHS Digital supersedes the  Health and Social Care Information Centre . NHS Digital describes itself as providing national information, data and IT systems for health and care services, and exists to help patients, clinicians, commissioners, analysts and researchers.

In January 2017 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed requiring NHS Digital to respond to Home Office requests for patients' data (date of birth, NHS registration, gender and address) to enforce immigration rules. This marks the intrusion of a political agenda into the way our medical records are kept. The Data Protection Bill currently going through Parliament (2018) introduces a framework that exempts government data handling from any oversight or scrutiny.
